Let’s be clear, I am not a summer knitter. I like the feel of a big chunky, super fluffy yarn in my arms, but summer projects do not appeal to me. I do have some in progress that have been in progress for quite some time, with the reality being that they are either never getting finished, or its a few hours work and they’d be ready to wear. I think part of it, is that in the U.K, we don’t really get a “traditional summer”, we get a random week of BURNING heat, followed by summer thunderstorms, torrential rain and then a few random days of burning hot, and what I’d call acceptable nice summer days that you can function in.
Nevertheless, summer knitwear includes tank tops, cute shorts and summer bags as cute as they are, do not serve a function place in my wardrobe. Sure, there are lightweight knitting projects I could do in the summer to save my sweaty fingers such as lightweight knitted tea towels – a quick, no thought required project, or coaster but I am 100% that person who likes to make something for me. A selfish knitter. Even in the gift giving season, or births of babies, I tend to gift knit stuff on the simpler side like baby booties or blankets. The thing is, for me. Someone who has had severe injuries to their elbow, knitting can induce pain if I go at it gung ho. That is the excuse I like to use, and is part of the truth, but also being asked to knit someone something, takes a LONG LONG TIME. Granted there are some exceptions to that, the SENTRO knitting machine is an absolute game changer if you want to make a hat or simple scarf for someone, days turn into about 20 minutes of your time. For me, the amount of time that it takes to knit something that you can’t guarantee someone will really love is not worth it for me. Even my boyfriend, I taught him to knit so he would see the pain staking amount of time it takes which saved the constant “can you make me a jumper?” question. On that, allegedly there is a myth about the curse of knitting a partner something and being the end of a relationship which I am totally happy to get on board with to save my fingers (and relationship haha). Anyway, a very quick and ranty knitting thought but let me know, what do you think of summer knits? Are you partial to light weight yarns, are you the Santa of knitted gifts at Holidays or a grinch like me! Let me know in the comments, see you all soon – M x
