Hello everyone! In this week’s video, I show you how to make a knitted wire heart using the prysm knitting mill. You can also use double-point needles too. I have a full video tutorial on my YouTube channel, Knitting with Maxine which you can watch along, but if you find it easier in written form it is down below for you!
Materials
- 1mm Wire, I got mine from Bead Spider
- Knitting Mill, I am using the Pryms Knitting Mill
- Double Point Needles if you’re not using a knitting mill. I got mine from Lovecrafts
- Scissors
- Tape Measure
- Yarn of your choice, I am using some yarn from my stash, the Hobbii Garland Pom Pom Yarn
- A Tapestry Needle
- Wire Cutters, also from Bead Spider
- Optional : Pencil and Paper
Step by Step Tutorial
- Create an Icord in your desired length. If you have a specific design in mind you can sketch it out using a pencil and some paper. You can then measure the total length of icord you will need. If you are unsure, make it longer than you think you will need you can unravel later if needed. Your design must be continuous.
- Once you have your icord, remove it from the knitting mill or DPNS. Do not stitch up the icord.
- Cut your 1mm wire to be slightly longer than your icord. You can trim it later if you need to.
- Create a loop at the end of the wire so you don’t have a sharp edge, you will then thread this end through the icord.
- Thread through the icord until the end
- Trim excess wire from the open end of the icord, create another loop at the end of the wire and seal the icord stitching the four stitches together by going through each of them. Go through the first stitch again to finish.
- Bend your design into place.
- Cut the excess threads or weave in the ends.
If you want a design that links and connects both ends… Do steps 1-5 as above. You then will need to do the following starting at 1a:
- a) Poke the loop end through the seal end, open slightly and secure to a stitch, pressing the loop to seal with yarn through the loop.
- a) Do steps 6 and 7 as above.
- a) Once you seal the open end push the loop you have created at that end through a stitch and latch onto the wire on the other side, press to secure
- a) Cover any exposed wire by using the tail ends of the yarn.
- Rejig your design if neccessary
- Cut the excess threads and weave in ends.
