This weekend, the second weekend in April, was the Chipping Sodbury Yarn Festival in the United Kingdom. It is an event that sees hundreds of people flock to the small town near Bristol for a weekend pack full of skeins, spinning and crafty hookers!
It was my first-ever yarn festival and it was a great experience, we had stunning Spring sunshine and a lot of yarn to admire. The event itself is hosted by the local yarn shop, the Wool Cellar. Over five different venues in the town, there are yarny craft adventures to be had from spinning, yarn dying, shopping and historic yarn experiences.

A fantastic map of Chipping Sodbury’s yarn festival venues. Each venue was full of yarn and crafty folk happy to share their skills, experiences and passions. Getting to Chipping Sodbuy was easy, with the high street being a short bus journey away from the train station in Yate.
Highlights of the festival
As noted in the vlog linked above, there were a few highlights for me including experiences and vendors. There were a few dyers who truly had an outstanding range of colours and fibres that stood out with the variety of options. I loved that each dyer’s personality was captured within their creations. My favourite experience however was chatting to the individual makers and learning about what inspired them and their life experiences. In addition to this, my number one highlight was trying spinning for the first time. Spinning yarn was something I would have never thought I would enjoy but I loved it and wasn’t terrible at it either!!

Would I recommend it?
Yes, I would recommend Sodbury Yarn Over Festival, it was a truly wonderful day, made by the weather and the people – especially getting to spend the day with my wonderful mum. It was a lovely day out, not too much walking and a shed load of yarn! I think the only bit of advice is to go in with a plan; if you know what projects you want to work on you’ll find it a lot easier to purchase versus just browsing and not knowing how much yarn you’ll need!
I hope you enjoy the vlog! Maxine x
